SnakeGrid software
Browse our selection of software packages and add-ons, designed to help you get the most out of SnakeGrid.
Our coordinate systems are supported by all major equipment manufactures and software developers with integration at the coordinate library level making all the normal tools available.
This is achieved by developers including the SnakeGrid algorithms directly in their software or through the secondary format (NTv2) delivered as standard with all new SnakeGrids. In relation to FME in particular the plugin does provide additional functionality above that which would be available through FME directly, details below.
The NTv2 format isn’t available for all historical grids as they have not all been converted at present. If you are working with such a grid, then some of the additional tools detailed below may be required. Alternatively contact us if you would like to get it converted.
More information around this will be added to the knowledge hub shortly.
Pointwise
For simple coordinate conversions the free SnakeGrid Pointwise software is available allowing users to switch between geographic coordinates and SnakeGrid projected Easting and Northings.
Copies of SnakeGrid PointWise can be downloaded from the link below.
SnakeGrid Projector for FME
SnakeGrid Projector is a plug in for FME (developed by Safe Software) that gives access to three transformer tools, SnakeGrid Projector, SnakeGrid Object and SnakeGrid Local. Demonstrations of the tools can be found on our YouTube channel.
Contact us for details of how to obtain a copy of SnakeGrid Projector, license fees apply.
SnakeGrid Projector is a plug-in to the FME software that gives access to the SnakeGrid algorithms directly. The tool has been developed to slot seamlessly into FME workflows allowing it to operate on file types currently supported by FME, and also by those file types which may be supported by FME in the future.
SnakeGrid Object is a tool designed to help understand how the conversion process affects the data.
When you move from one coordinate system to another it is usually accompanied by a change in scale factor and so objects appear to be of different size and the spatial relationships between them appear to have changed. More details can be found on this in the knowledge hub soon.
SnakeGrid Object allows users to handle all the same data types as SnakeGrid Projector but gives more options in the way that it deals with these distortions.
With SnakeGrid Object, users can carry out a “pure” transformation by vertex and accept the distortions of size and position; or they can use its analytical tools to explore the possibility of transforming complex objects as a block and not change the relative sizes and positions of its component parts if the distortions are within acceptable limits.
Check out the videos on the you tube channel for more details.
Many engineering projects have a coordinate system created for them “on site” by assigning arbitrary coordinates to a datum point, selecting an orientation, and carrying out a survey to determine other control point coordinates. This eliminates any scale factor distortions, but the link to other coordinate systems (for example the national mapping system, or other engineering grids) is not clear.
SnakeGrid Local gives users a tool to derive appropriate transformations for these engineering coordinate systems, and to create SnakeGrid parameter files for them – which can then be used with other software or applications.
SnakeGrid Transformer for MicroStation
SnakeGrid Transformer is a MicroStation ™ add-on that converts data between several different coordinate systems, including any required SnakeGrid as well as others such as the London Survey Grid, Ordnance Survey National Grid, and some local engineering site grids.
Files are converted from one grid to another in a few seconds with a single button press. No information is lost when files are converted. All symbology and user attributes (e.g. database linkages) are retained. The MicroStation elements are converted according to a set of user-definable rules. Vector maps are dynamically converted to the correct grid as per the user-definable conversion rules. Raster maps are transformed with a multi-point warping algorithm.
SnakeGrid Transformer has been developed in association with our partners dhp11 Ltd, who are responsible for technical support. See their website for more information on the latest versions, installation and user guides, FAQs, test scripts and so on.
