Case study: Edinburgh to Berwick-upon-Tweed
AECOM, in collaboration with BAM and CH2MHILL and working under the CP5 SNE SI/GI Framework, are to provide advance Ground Investigation, Site Investigation (GI/SI) and survey work at Dunbar, East Linton and Reston on the East Coast Mainline (ECM8).
New stations are proposed at East Linton and Reston. A new down platform on the fast line and potentially new up platform on the fast line are proposed at Dunbar Station. Option selection for East Linton and Reston has not been undertaken yet therefore surveys will cover the area of the likely option locations.
AECOM were commissioned to install and observe a Survey Control Network from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Edinburgh Waverley Station. This would enable the integration of all survey and asset information data for current and future improvement packages into the one survey grid system.
In order to establish a Tertiary Control Network at each of the locations a GNSS Primary /Secondary Control survey was required to tie the surveys into the existing Project Grid System.
On this Project the Local SnakeGrid™ system is ECML14. This has been designed as a continuous coordinate grid from London to Edinburgh via the East Coast Mainline, achieving a root mean square distortion of just 4.0 parts per million (ppm), and a maximum distortion on the mainline of 9.4 ppm.
